A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

In 1883 the volcanic island of krakatoa erupted with the most catastrophic results. this story follows the experiences of a dutch family who witnessed the eruption of krakatoa. It also follows the accounts of a missionary who recorded his accounts of the eruption. People thought it was three, small volcanoes on 1 island but through his research he discovers it is 1 giant volcano about to have a massive eruption on a scale noonoe has ever witnessed. The 4th explosion was the largest noise ever recorded. It was heard 6 thousand miles away in Brisbane,Australia! an incerdible story of survival and horrible tragedy of a Dutch family and amazing heroics and quick wit of a ship captain make this a truly great story. I was just absolutely shocked at the catastrophic effects an eruption so far reaching can inflict. a must see!!

I'm Indonesian, this poor movie i ever watch. Foreign language part is not "Bahasa Indonesia" but "melayu" (malaysian) "javanese" people speaking "melayu" very strange dialect. The people around Krakatau's must be Sundanese not Javanese, west Java is Sundanese, very different between Sundanese and Javanese, both language and culture. See when earthquake happen what the people do?? very funny, no panic there! So i think this movie never make a survey about Indonesia situation and people.. Specially please understand the west Java people, Indonesia culture (note: Indonesia not Malaysia). When we watch this movie I feel strange with my country and culture.

A fact-based account of the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa in the Sunda Strait near Java, an Indonesian island. The eruption and its effects (including tsunamis and a super-hot ash cloud) took over 36,000 lives. The story follows several characters throughout the ordeal, including a Dutch official, his family, and his native clerk; a ship captain, his passengers and crew; a lighthouse keeper and his family; and a Dutch scientist in Indonesia to study the regions volcanoes. Included are narrations from diaries and journals of the survivors. The special effects are pretty good for a film of its kind, and unlike most made-for-TV fare, this docudrama actually has some good acting.

This is an excellent account of the events surrounding the eruption of the volcano at Krakatoa and the devastation that followed. Taken from the diaries of survivors it demonstrates the strength of the human spirit and the instinct for survival when this destructive force of nature is unleashed upon them. There are so many poignant moments - the bravery of the ship's captain as he battled the tsunami, the mother who thought she had reached safety only to suffer a cruel blow in the aftermath of the tragedy and the woman who left her home to look for her dog - a decision which saved her life.Great acting, special effects and direction - unmissable.
