Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.

It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.

The film may be flawed, but its message is not.

Wow!!! So happy I have finally got to see this. Remember seeing it in the video shop as a kid and the cover looked magical. Picked it up for 20p from a charity shop today. IT IS SO COOL.Basically these kids hang round a train yard playing in the trains and exploring the city. One day one of them sees a rainbow land in front of him and its the most magical thing ever. Now all the kids want to find the rainbow again....maybe it will take them somewhere....maybe it will change everything.....Hope you enjoy it. Kids from age of 7 to 10 should absolutely love this.I'm 29 and I love it so adults should like it a lot too.

I used to watch this a few times when I was a child, and it is one of the movies I always think of when I say to myself 'childhood movies'.It is a fantastic movie, one which can also teach children a moral lesson: 'Do not take what is not yours' and 'If you don't know what it is, leave it alone.' It is a truly magical tale of finding the ever beautiful and ever colourful Rainbow and what happens to the world when it becomes void of such a beautiful spectacle.Sadly, the movie is very hard to get a hold of nowadays, but I'd recommend anyone who can find it to watch it ASAP!

I think the folks who didn't like the second half missed the point -- its supposed to show the world falling apart, becoming dull & lifeless... the Rainbow gives power, light, and energy to the Earth. I thought it was a great fantasy movie, especially for kids -- it has an original story, with a wise and timeless moral lesson that is not too heavy handed. The effects are outstanding, especially remember this film is from 1996. The ride inside the rainbow is worth the price of the whole movie. How many of us wish we could go inside that kind of ride? If you're looking for a decent family film without sex, violence, or a puppet show, here's a real film both kids and parents can enjoy... its a good one for everybody

Bob Hoskins does the most convincing American accent I've ever heard a British actor do, but directing doesn't seem to come as naturally as dialect. This movie features unattractive leading children, unbelievable school situations, stereotypical 'media' types, and completely fails to persuade even the most credulous that the magic is *there*. Special effects are variable, but generally poor. Unconvincing acting ruins what might have been rather good dialogue. It's a shame. I really, really wanted to like this movie, but there was no there there.
