Disappointment for a huge fan!
Absolutely Fantastic
Yo, there's no way for me to review this film without saying, take your *insert ethnicity + "ass" here* to see this film, like now. You have to see it in order to know what you're really messing with.
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
I'm not religious in the slightest, but you don't have to be to enjoy this wonderful feelgood musical. I can't understand any bad reviews on here. I bet they were still foot-tapping away to the songs. I've seen several different versions of this on stage as well, but the film did the stage musical justice and, with the era, it is locked in time with the whole hippie scene and a more carefree look on life, on love and hope for the future, something that's missing in many ways today.
Watched this again after many years. Hated it first time as JCS was out and was more 'hip'. Now realize that this was much better and that the portrayal of Jesus is more accurate. (I think HE would probably really enjoy it). Cast was great, especially enjoyed the lovely Gilmer McCormick's portrayal of Abraham and the Good Samaritan. By My Side as a song made me cry as it's the way we should relate to Jesus, I tend to put the word death in place of dare as for me it makes more sense. This should have been released rather than Day by day. Loved the settings and the simplicity of the way the people related to Jesus. As a Christian I would recommend it highly even if bits of it are out of sync with the Gospels
I originally saw this movie when it was released, and my Dad, who moonlighted as a projectionist, took me to the State Theater in Lexington, Va. This was before the old movie theaters were cut up into mini 'cinemas'. The balcony at the State was closed to the public for who knows why...fire marshal, unruly patrons, cleaning expense, whatever. When my Dad was working I had the whole balcony, 200 seats or so to myself. The projectors were the old Carbon-Arc. Most people probably don't even know what those are. Sound and picture were amazing. Wasn't Dolby surround, but for 1973... This is a must see movie!! Amazes me still seeing the empty sets for the filming. Excellent music! "day by Day" and "by my side"...You have to hear them. The film may seem dated to many of you...a last gasp of the 60's flower child culture. That may be so. However, I still HIGHLY recommend it. Even if you're not a religious person, the music and sets are worth it. It's a long movie...stick with it. 40 years later it's still holding my attention if that tells you anything.
Frankly, this movie is silly.Like others have mentioned, I too was confused at how "John the Baptist" morphed into Judas. It is dated, however that part can be fun. Also, seeing the Twin Towers...well, that is another subject (possibly the most powerful part of the film for today).Outside of that...it is a guilty pleasure. Kinda like the Godzilla (hmmm...God..zilla/God...spell) movies that your afraid to admit you watch despite their silliness. If you watch this movie, do it for the camp and the music, not the "message".
