Johnny Liston has just been released from prison where he has wrongly served twelve years for a murder. He returns to Campos, the village of his birth, where the whole town is terrorized by Johnny's brother, Sartana, who has taken Manuela, Johnny's fiancèe to be his lover. This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
Unshakable, witty and deeply felt, the film will be paying emotional dividends for a long, long time.
