Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.

it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.

This will be a short review, because it's easy to summarize the good and no-so-good aspects of this movie. The acting is good ⎯ better than typical Hollywood fare. The cinematography is excellent. The plot is quite predictable. That's not a major gripe, since I mostly watch martial arts movies for the skill of the fighters and cleverness of the choreography. It's like a kind of violent ballet when done well. But this plot lazily borrows from movies from decades ago and doesn't improve on them.Speaking of fighting, the fight choreography is okay. I expected better. The one-on-one sequences in the second half of the movie are very good. However, the multi-person fights aren't so great. You get a lot of the cliché of a group of bad guys attacking mostly one at a time with the others busting a move in the background while waiting their turn. Plus, the fighting concepts themselves are a bit repetitious. I have definitely seen far more imagination given to fight sequences and especially use of the set during the fight. The same things have been done better in other movies. Another issue with this movie was its inaccurate depiction of certain aspects of the period. The biggest problem was that they've taken modern views, concerns, and male-female interactions and injected them into a movie set in a much different time. Younger people may not pick up on this much, if at all, but when you're aware of the social mores of the day the mistakes stand out like a fart at a funeral. So, what you have is a well-filmed movie with so-so fighting, predictable plot, and unrealistic characterizations. It could have been much better ⎯ like the first Ip Man movie, for example.

This is a good movie that goes beyond the usual Martial Arts storyline and focuses on the human side of Ip Man. The love for his wife is the backbone f this story and the ending is very sad. Donnie Yen is excellent as IP man and portrays him with real sincerity. The Wing Chun is more accurate than in previous films and shows how amazing it is a close up technique. This is shown especially in the elevator scene wit the Muay Thai kick boxer played by Simon Kuke of Tony Jaa's stunt team. The fight with Mike Tyson is also good and although some criticise the shortness of the fight (3minutes) I think this is fair as it would have been a matter of time before Tysons power knocked out Ip man Yen's finale with Zhang could have been better but it did at least show some very authentic Wing Chun.I thought the introduction of Bruce Lee did not work on a number of levels. The actor playing Bruce portrayed him as he became later on, whereas Bruce was very much younger when he met Ip man. Bruce would not have used much if any martial Arts skills when he first met Ip man as he had not been trained in any and certainly would not have used high kicks. IP man took on Bruce and following criticism from other students that as Bruce was only half Chinese he should not be taught Kung Fu, IP Man taught him privately. Also Ip man was much older than portrayed in this movie when he started to train Bruce. If they had kept to the facts this could have made an interesting part of this film, instead it seemed like a comedic element had been added. So over all a good but not Brilliant movie. Well worth a watch though.

The Ip Man movies are modern martial arts classics, and naturally, the final installment had a lot to live up to to follow the excellent first, and (in my opinion) even better second, and yet it does not disappoint at all.Donnie Yen is superb as always, a solid acting performance providing embellishment to the high class of martial arts we have come to expect from him. The scenes in this are expertly choreographed, beautifully shot, and powerfully delivered, and once again I find myself entranced. A lot of commentary has centred around the increased 'spirituality' in this installment, which I personally welcomed as I find it adds depth that ultimately draws you further into the experience. In summary, another fantastic movie and worthy of the title.

The movie has multiple story lines and the best part is it s script. The sense in its message it very clear and simple. They have not tried to enforce any idea or archetypal melodrama. Music also supports the scenes and fights. Cinematography is very technical and artistic at the same time. Action sequences in its major percentage kept near to physical laws but there are scenes which have allowed room for chines traditional fight choreography so you not to loose yourself in kicks and punches only. In it s emotional essence movie can make you cry and might get you motivated. Movie evoked a very calming experience and i was not in a balanced state of mind. I hope you enjoy the movie.
