I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.

Absolutely the worst movie.

The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.

Before zombies became flesh eating creatures it were slaves driven by voodoo rituals from witch doctors. Even though a much better effort than the overly boring "I walked with a zombie" this one focuses on the greed of a magistrate (and he has a few other important professions) using voodoo not only to cause death upon young people (mostly men). Again with voodoo he brings them back to life as zombies who are forced to work for him as slaves in a mine digging I guess for gold or other precious things. It has a few nice scenes such as the rising from the grave from Alice and turning into a zombie and than the dream sequence where we see other dead people digging themselves up from their resting place. Unfortunately that is not enough to save the movie. Not saying the story is bad and it's OK in the visual department but it doesn't come across as very atmospheric. There are no stand out performances. I feel this one would have been better had it been in black and white. For me it lacked soul and felt overly long to reach its goal. A rather weak finale too. I think White Zombie did a much better job even though the story was very simple.

John Gilling directed this atmospheric Hammer studios thriller that stars Andre Morell as Sir James Forbes, who, along with his daughter Sylvia(played by Diane Clare) have arrived at a Cornish village to help his former student Peter Thompson(played by Brook Williams) deal with a string of mysterious deaths he hasn't been able to solve because of the superstitious villagers. The local Squire Hamilton(played by John Carson) is in reality the leader of a secret voodoo cult that is using zombies as slave labor in his silver mine, and having first targeted Peter's wife Alice, now wants Sylvia... Excellent horror film has fine atmosphere, direction, and script, with good performances by all. Makes a perfect double feature with "The Reptile", also from Hammer.

Known for being the first movie to introduce zombies as flesh eating ghouls (before Night Of The Living Dead did it), this low-budget Hammer movie doesn't really have a lot to offer. We start with a creepy underground voodoo ritual, unintelligible chanting and blood dropping on a doll, and a woman waking up and reciting the same chant. We learn later that the woman is an old friend of the protagonist, played with expression by Diane Clare. Her father and her go to a small British village, to visit the woman and her husband, a doctor (and former student of the old man) who is struggling with the skepticism of the village people on letting him perform an autopsy on any of the many recently deceased. The last noteworthy character is the Squire Clive Hamilton, a rich and mysterious man. Hamilton's men kidnap Ms. Forbes (Clare), and take her to his home, where they begin to torture her mentally, but the charming Squire comes to the rescue, and from there on, attempts to spark a relationship with her. Of course not everything's what it seems, and soon enough Mrs. Forbes' friend dies, murdered by a decomposing man. While her father and the doctor investigate, she learns that Mr. Hamilton might be the cause of her friend's death, and that she might be next. While quite original for its time, for me it didn't work as well, because, well, I've watched a lot of movies that pull the same tricks before seeing this. The look of the zombies is easily surpassed by that of Night Of The Living Dead, which was made only a year later, and the acting is average at best, the standoff being Clare and André Morell, who plays her father. The mystery is easy to figure out 30minutes in the movie, but it's still a very original movie for it's time, and you can see that it was made with a lot of love for the genre.

i remember seeing this movie when i was only 8 yrs old. scared the crap out of me. my dad had to come to the theater and get me. i never forgot this movie. cant wait to see it again. i remember this movie had the whole place screaming. very graphic for its time. i found this movie when i was looking for other movies done back in the 1960's. I'm so glad i found it and for a real good price. it will a gem in my DVD collection. i will be making a big bowl of popcorn for this one!! i often tried to find this movie but was not sure of the title. i like the old thrillers as i remember sneaking off to the movies. i used to take money from my grandmothers purse, and sneak off with my friend. dad would get so mad when he had to drag a terrified child home and then try and convince me it was just a movie. oh the good times!!
