On the last day of the first manned mission to Mars, a crew member of Tantalus Base believes he has made an astounding discovery – fossilized evidence of bacterial life. Unwilling to let the relief crew claim all the glory, he disobeys orders to pack up and goes out on an unauthorized expedition to collect further samples. But a routine excavation turns to disaster when the porous ground collapses and he falls into a deep crevice. His devastated colleagues attempt to recover his body. However, when another vanishes, they start to suspect that the life-form they have discovered is not without danger.

It is not deep, but it is fun to watch. It does have a bit more of an edge to it than other similar films.

NOW! Complete with spot spoilers. This film is about the Aurora 2 International Mars station. It is a 6 month one way journey. Their mission is for 6 months. They are in the final 20 hours of the mission before they return to Earth. The characters are introduced with Kim (Olivia Williams) being a person everyone would rather not work with. She is upset because their mission failed to find any life. Meanwhile the Russian scientist (Goran Kostic) is out repairing a gamma sensor...when....The set and background was pretty decent. I didn't know if the film was going to be: a) boring like "Gravity" b) a smart horror like "Ghosts of Mars" c) something stupid like a big rubber headed monster or something really dumb like zombies.Yup. It was "C." I couldn't believe they wasted a nice looking set. It seems a Martian bacterial infection causes people to not only go crazy and want to harm other people, but it also allows the organism to operate in the near non-existing Martian atmosphere. I hate it when a military doctor says, "Sorry, penicillin isn't going to work this time" but nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition, which at this point would have made the film better.People who enjoyed "Apollo 18" might like this one. I saw it as wasted potential. Works as a rental.Parental Guidance: F-bomb. No sex or nudity.

The Last Days On Mars Hulu This film shines in what it doesn't say. Everyone says this is too familiar and has nothing new, but I strongly disagree. While it does build on great past sci fi films, it puts an Earthly plot (zombies essentially) on a foreign planet. It's most definitely not just a monster movie (though it also takes cues from some great ones). It is definitively sci fi, snuggly fitting with the classics (2001: A Space Odyssey, Event Horizon, even Interstellar, though technically that came after, plus the various Mars movies), although it is a more subtle type, destined to be under appreciated because of its willingness to leave so many plot points open. Like great sci fi (stress in the fi), it has a lot of unexplained phenomena that it recognizes wholeheartedly (how can they be moving if their brain isn't functioning?), but it is compelling enough for you to suspend your disbelief and enjoy the ride. Also, don't expect a clean ending. Good sci fi will leave you with an open mind - and that is why this is so good, but also less popular. Unfortunately, most general audiences prefer to be coached down to every detail and meaning in art. Come on people. Have a bit of imagination. Frankly, I do sometimes like movies that dumb everything down, or especially movies that make logical sense down to the very last detail, but I also appreciate something different, some variety. And I would say that this film delivered on both levels - we pretty much know what is going to happen in the end, without having to actually see it. It leaves that unsettled feeling that is also somehow comforting.

This film is not a masterpiece, nor does it pretend to be. It's a simple, bare bones sci-fi horror flick that has good atmosphere and good horror in the obviously inhuman zombies. There's a small buildup to the events, but the film doesn't make this the focus. It obviously wants to get to the meat of the story quickly so as to not bore the audience. Once the action starts it continues in a slow rhythm that fits the pace pretty well, it also builds up some intrigue about the monsters and why they exist, but the film doesn't answer all of your questions which keeps you hooked. The film has some clear influences, one scene reminded me of Aliens when Vincent was crawling through the ducts to repair something else while the other characters fend off the monsters. The film isn't smart, but it doesn't have to be, all it aims to do is entertain - and it does that quite well. I recommend giving it a watch if you're looking for a thriller that raises some intrigue but isn't trying to focus your attention on it. It also has some pretty decent acting, direction and effects that keep you immersed.

This movie takes place in the not too distant future and involves a group of explorers. They are an exploratory group that has spent some time on a planet in our own system – Mars. Their research is nearly done and they are scheduled to blast off in a little less than a day. One of the members has chosen to venture off on his own to deal with some findings at a sight; the rest of the team discovers that he has found microbial life. This doesn't bode well as he has kept it a secret; the speculation is that he wants to keep the credit for himself.Things go further awry as the selfish crewman suddenly false into a giant pit around the microbe site. Contact is lost and the rest of the team sets out to follow; all while their countdown time to liftoff encroaches. Once on site they set up base and one of the team members go down the hole via tether. What he finds is microbial life that is growing on the rocks. He breaks into a panic attack for for cinema effect and is reeled back up. Once surface side, he reports he saw the bottom and nothing else. One of the team members sees tracks and the group follows. They finally meet up with the monstrosities that their crew has become. The microbial life has infected them and causes them to act like berserk zombies that do not require oxygen and can survive in vacuum of Mars. The final goal of the adventurers is to get their way back to the launchsite where they will rendezvous to blast off with the mothership so they can get home. The movie is quite an adventure and plays out very similar to "Prometheus". Many people did not like "Prometheus" due to the childish antics of the characters involved; but "The Last Days on Mars" does away with this and goes for an entirely scientific exploratory crew that follows orders; only when they become infected or in hysteria do they violate this oath. The movie is quite a good watch and I recommend it. It is part science fiction, action as well as horror.Originally posted to Orion Age (http://www.orionphysics.com/?p=9713).
