Given its mediocre quality in acting, directing and screenplay, it's not difficult to see why this movie has become an easy target to quite a few lambasting reviews. As most reviewers put it Rachel Nichols is a total miscast as the wife of Nick Cage. As for Cage, he has an honest attempt for his role if you can see past his hair style, which could sometimes be a challenge. If it were all to it I'd cut the movie a slack and accept it as a subpar guys night movie without further ado. However, the real problem is with its pathetic pretentiousness. The ringleader of a Russian gang utters a few wise sounding words and tells a brief "heartbreaking" story of how he got involved in this game. Suddenly, this is supposed to add a "philosophical" dimension and character depth to an otherwise all evil bunch. Give me a break.

Not like the movie Taken at all. So its in no way a bad or a good copy of that movie. This movie is in some ways over the top and kind of silly, but also more realistic in its main story than most action (if you remove some of the characters and some of the action). Some of the characters act really bizarre, mostly Danny Glover, that cop character acts like its a cool revenge story ( I don't like what you do but if you wanna kill an army of guys go ahead I understand, a man gotta do what a man gotta do). To me the only message in this flick was the meaningless of violence. It masquerade itself to be a straight forward action movie in the two thirds of it and not really being that is the strength and the weakness of Tokarev.

When Nicolas Cage wants to play mean...he can play mean! Paul Maguire(Cage)is a well respected businessman, owning a construction company and with no second thoughts about his generosity to local charities. Family man with a beautiful wife Vanessa(Rachel Nichols)and popular daughter Caitlin(Aubrey Peeples). Peel back enough layers and you find a man with a very violent past. During a fancy dinner out, Paul is informed that his daughter had been kidnapped and a couple of her friends left beaten. Maguire wants info on who would have done this. He reaches out to a couple of his old crew to find her, by any means necessary. When Caitlin's body is found, Paul goes ballistic trying to find who is responsible. Just how many faces can you re-arrange? How many knees can you put bullets in to find information? Far from boring, and definitely brutal. Not just rage, but rage in overdrive. And it appears that Cage is paying homage to his idol, Elvis Presley, because his hair has obviously been died blacker than black on black.Maguire's two thugs are played by Michael McGrady and Max Ryan. Also in the cast: Danny Glover, Pasha D. Lychnikoff, Patrice Cols, Michael Papajohn and Max Fowler.

I was hoping for some good old classic criminals-messing-with-the-wrong-guy rather violent action movie when I sat down to watch this one. I was indeed expecting it to be a B-movie but being a B-movie does not necessarily make it a bad movie. Well I was right about it being a B-movie and it was indeed rather violent but for the rest it did not turn out to be exactly what I hoped for.Paul and his buddies does indeed start to crack down on the less desirable elements of society. This they do using the well-known strategy of applying a healthy dose of violence and if that does not work then you use more violence. In general the movie starts off fairly well but as we ride along it starts to degenerate into silly outbreaks of rage. I know the movie is called Rage (as well as Tokarev) but I was expecting the rage to be directed towards the bad guys and not just senseless shouting into the air. The further we go the more it degenerates. There is the classical cops-who-intervene-and-let-the-bad-guys-get-away stuff. Very annoying. The stupid screw-up of Danny and Paul's way of handling it was also a bit of a downer.Still, the movie was not all that bad until we reached the end. Well, the end does have a twist to it that has to be said. It also had to be said that I did not like it at all. Even if I could have gotten over the twist itself, the actions of Paul afterwards and the final scenes really sunk the movie for me.Nicolas Cage did not do a bad performance but, as far as I am concerned, he was given a less than stellar script to work with. Technically I would say that this was on the upper half of the scale for B-movies but the story, especially the ending, was not my cup of tea.
