Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.

Yes, absolutely, there is fun to be had, as well as many, many things to go boom, all amid an atmospheric urban jungle.

"The Code" or "Thick as Thieves" as it is called is a 2009 film starring Morgan Freeman, Antonio Banderas, Radha Mitchell, and Robert Forrester. The story concerns a slippery thief, Keith Ripley (Freeman), who teams up with a thief from Miami, Gabriel (Banderas) to steal antique Faberge eggs that are kept in a vault surrounded by huge security trappings at a jewelry store named Romanov's.Ripley needs to do the theft as a debt payment for his late brother, who was mixed up with a Russian mobster. He wants the eggs, and he's determined to get them. They are being watched by Lieutenant Weber, who has been trying to get Ripley for years.Freeman and Banderas didn't have much chemistry, and Freeman, of course, is capable of roles having much more depth. So both kind of glided along, Banderas using his charm, and Freeman his geniality.Derivative story with a couple of twists. A decent rental.

Thick as Thieves is a typical heist movie, just about what I expected. But one starring (especially) Morgan Freeman and Antonio Banderas I just had to see. Masterthief Ripley needs to recruit help, Martin, to pull of the heist of a lifetime. Ripley has indebted himself to a Russian gangster and needs to steal to mythical Fabergé-eggs from Romanovs, a jeweler with a vault like a fort. And of course there are a police detective on their heels. The story is set up with hidden secrets and twists and turns. Some I caught and some I didn't. Just about the right mix to make it entertaining, but nothing special. It is a thriller, but there is a somewhat humorous tone. Just like it should be in a big heist movie. What it lacks is the feeling of suspense and surprise. It's hard to balance it just right and Thick as Thieves doesn't quite manage it. But with Freeman in the lead it is I said, entertaining. Especially for heist movie fans.6/10

After making three mediocre movies (The Peacemaker, Deep Impact and Pay It Forward), director Mimi Leder went to work in television, directing during a decade episodes from TV series such as ER, The West Wing and John Doe.Thick as Thieves, her return to the cinema, is a pathetic thriller with a trite, badly written and weakly implemented story. The only thing which could have rescued it is its high profile cast, if it had offered good performances. But the film also fails on that.Well, I may exaggerated by saying Thick as Thieves has bad performances.I usually do not like the work of Antonio Banderas very much, but Morgan Freeman is one of my favorite actors, and Radha Mitchell, Robert Forster and Rade Serbedzija are also solid interpreters. However, there is not any energy or enthusiasm on their performances; they all show an absolute apathy for their characters. And besides of that, the screenplay consists of a horrible collection of clichés, like for example, the forced romance which arises between two people after 5 minutes of having met; the tedious explanation of the security system the thieves have to violate; the supposedly tense sequence of the robbery, full of incongruent technology and ridiculous logic; the artificial flukes which save dangerous situations at the last moment; the confrontations between thief and cop as rivals who respect their mutual honor and talent...Shall I go on? Thick as Thieves is a boring and lazy pastiche of archaic ideas and concepts. In summary, Thick as Thieves is a horrible and tedious thriller which is full of clichés.This is the kind of film in which I really feel I wasted my time, so do not make the same mistake I did, and avoid Thick as Thieves by all means.

I never held Banderas to any standards, but shame on Morgan Freeman for being part of this disaster. The plot sucks from the very opening scene. My 10 year old son could come up with a better script. There is nothing in this movie to hold your attention, and interest. Not one decent convincing character. The plot is absurd. Acting - horrendous. The ending incomprehensible. Nothing in this movie rings truth. I've never before seen a movie where the music was dissatisfying to me, but this flick managed to do that too. To simplify this for you: let me just say that it's a Mariachi band playing in Red Square - I'm not kidding you. ...and when you really don't know what to do with a movie - throw in some sex scenes. Voila!
