After catching a glimpse of his father being killed "Malo" (Curtis Jackson) decides to follow in his footsteps and become a police officer too. As soon as he graduates from the police academy an old friend of his father by the name of "Joe Sarcone" (Robert De Niro) reaches out to him and offers him a position within his precinct under the condition that he fully participates in the corruption that Joe Sarcone oversees. Malo willingly agrees and gets his two childhood friends who graduated with him to join as well. In no time he and his friends become even worse than the criminals on the street. Now rather than reveal any more of this movie and risk spoiling it for those who haven't seen it I will just say that this film left me somewhat disappointed. The main reason was that it lacked realism. Big time. Likewise, some of the actors just didn't seem to fit their character assignments. In any case, I suppose it was an okay movie but quite frankly I have a hard time rating it any higher than average.

We found this one in the bargain bin, and that's where it should have stayed. My wife and I started watching this last night, but the utterly ridiculous storyline and script made it impossible to watch to the end. As such I can only review the first 26 minutes of what is by far the worst film I've ever seen. I've no idea what Robert De Niro and Forest Whitaker were doing in this movie, but presumably they were in desperate need of money. I can imagine that we'll be seeing them both doing ads for haemorrhoid cream, or perhaps even appearing on the shopping channel soon.....If you like to think that 95% of all policemen are corrupt, and that all white police officers are crass and violent racists, this may be ideal entertainment for you. Otherwise the only worthwhile reason for watching it, is to laugh at the sight of 50 Cent wearing a policeman's hat (actually I'm sure this can be seen in the trailer, so I'd advise you to save your money!)

'Freelancers' is a so-so fare, that has some merit, but it isn't fully loaded either. 'Freelancers' Synopsis: The son of a slain NYPD officer joins the force, where he falls in with his father's former partner and a team of rogue cops.'Freelancers' rests on a clichéd plot. The ever-lasting tale of of an honest cop & his battle with corrupt cops/gangsters/thief's has been depicted on the big screen an umpteen number of times. So in terms of novelty, 'Freelancers' has none of it. However, a few dramatic moments are skillfully executed, which certainly deserve a mention.L. Philippe Casseus's Screenplay is average. Jessy Terrero's Direction is decent. Action-Sequences are nicely executed. Performance-Wise: 50 Cent makes a sincere attempt to justify his part. De Niro is in his element. Forest Whitaker doesn't get much scope. On the whole, 'Freelancers' is an okay watch.

A movie that is a notch above straight to video releases made by former Action Stars, but not by much. It has all that jazzy "new" look (that is actually ancient) of high contrast, over saturated colors and that "video" sheen. That style is so common now that it actually is more standard than stylish, and wearing woefully thin and ho-hum. This type of razzmatazz is a sure sign that the movie is not comfortable with its story or the Director is hackneyed and delivering hokum. The film moves along at a rapid pace and most of the interesting aspects are left unresolved and dangling. It works best when guns are pulled and violence is viewed, and least interesting when booty to bedroom scenes are included for the obligatory observing of nudity and drugs take center stage. One final and fatal flaw. The mumbling and speech swallowing is once again present in the lead "actor" (and by other performers of all races in other movies), and that is why in the old Hollywood studio system they gave diction lessons to their untrained contract players. This slackness has become an epidemic in modern movies and has reached critical mass.
