Don't Believe the Hype
The movie really just wants to entertain people.
I had read the book The Snowman by Jo Nesbø before I watched the movie and I liked it very much. The movie, however, tried to fit 500-page book into a 2-hour movie not only by omitting many scenes but also by totally changing the script or cutting the scenes.The result is that the movie is not understandable for viewers who are not familiar with the book because too many characters and their motivations remain unexplained (e.g. Rafto). And viewers who have read the book are disappointed that the characters they know from the book behave significantly differently in the movie than in the book.But the Norwegian movie settings are beautiful and I guess The Snowman deserves a 10-part TV series that would better transfer the book content into the movie script. A good example of such well working mini-series from northern Europe is Midnight Sun (2016).
My wife and I watched this movie at home on DVD from our public library.I am not familiar with the book but it evidently was a good success. This movie not so much so. It starts with a scene of an unhappy family and rather quickly the mother drives her car onto a frozen lake then stops. The boy gets out but she stays in, the ice cracks, she drowns. The story that follows is more than a bit disjointed and only near the end do we learn of the significance of the opening. Michael Fassbender is Harry Hole, a detective assigned to a murder that quickly appears to be linked to others. Most of the movie is him and others investigating clues and piecing together what is going on. It could have been made into a rather gripping story but instead comes across as rather bland.We were disappointed, the several good actors here are mostly wasted.
....the rushed production. It deviated so far from the book, dropped several characters and made everyone sound American or English. Perish the thought of reading subtitles! :o If they are planning to make a series of these like they did with James Patterson's books and Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross, please make the next one better. Take your time filming it.
Oslo, Norway is the setting for this mystery/detective movie. Oslo becomes a character in itself, cold and unforgiving. Michael Fassbender is a flawed character dealing with a pathological killer. The Snowman has mystery, drama, action with an unexpected ending.
