It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.

What a little gem! HERE ALONE follows a woman who's trying to survive alone in the woods. She soon finds company, with a man and his daughter joining her camp. Unfortunately, not everybody gets along...HERE ALONE is a zombie movie with very few zombies. But in essence, it is what the genre was always about: The plight of people in extreme situations. The movie focuses much on the interactions of its characters, not so much on the violence. HERE ALONE is calm, slow, and ultimately very strong on the emotional front.Besides the good acting, I have to point out the beautiful cinematography and camera work (great use of depth of field, beautiful landscape shots). But most importantly, the superb directing: The first few scenes are almost entirely told with images, little mini stories unfolding entirely through the actions of characters rather than through dialogue. Just when this may become boring, things change— the plot pacing is perfect, if you're in for a zombie movie that takes its time... If you're in for a violent gore flick, give this one a miss.

Usually I don't reference other's reviews, but one said "this is what the walking dead wants to be," another said "unpredictable", only one other review said what this film is: bad. This film is boring, poorly written and actually is pretty dumb. I like nature scenes as much as the next person who enjoys nature, but the first twenty minutes tell you little about what's going on other than the main character is bathing in some lake and taking water from it, while living out of a car. The acting is so-so since no one really has to stretch. Some biological even has taken place "A virus" that is laying waste to humanity. I don't want to spoil anything so that's all I say. The few infected who show up have makeup that wouldn't make it on FACE OFF. But the later human interpersonal interactions are so telegraphed and the ending is so stupid, that I'm amazed I was able to sit through this at all. I'm fairly sure that the good reviews came from people who know those who made this, or worked on it, something all too common on IMDb. So if you want to waster part of your life (as I'm sure many of us have done) watch this. If not, skip it.

Ann is surviving alone in the woods during the zombie apocalypse. She's no Ripley, but she's not a scream queen either. Holing up in the woods of upstate NY was the idea of her survivalist husband in an effort to save them and their infant child (ominous tone). But Ann isn't a strict adherent to her husband's survivalist tutoring, shown especially when two uninfected strangers show up and present an immediate tension in the rationing of the already meager supplies. But also the tensions of three people living alone in the woods. The Road meets No Exit.A nice touch to this movie, besides the slow reveal of the outcomes of the rest of Ann's family, is how there doesn't need to be a clear sign of zombie for the first half hour or so, merely suggestion and peripheral sightings. But the movie doesn't hold off from seeing the monsters for too long to make their absence distracting. The film doesn't quite cash in on its interpersonal tensions by the end, but overall an intriguing effort.

Movies filmed or funded out of NY and environs have consistently been of the lowest quality, noncreative, unoriginal and cheap of any location on Earth (well, maybe Mexico & Thailand are in the same ballpark). Support for this film as an example: 1. Virus produces zombies. Mechanism never explained; extent never explained; nothing explained with regards to the "infection". Boringly overdone plot concept anyway. 2. Zombies running, actually sprinting. How if they're dead? Romero, alive or dead, would be aghast. Zombies living in a fenced-in area, and off of what? It was just them; eventually they would need some meat. Even that isn't clear if they're dead. 3. Cinematography was mostly poor quality - view of lake, nondescript woods and leaves. Occupied half the film. 4. Acting was robotic and consisted mostly of flashbacks to pre-virus days mostly on preparing survival skills for the apocalypse. What forest foods are edible; making a camp, etc. Exciting! 5. Dumb ending, actually not an ending. Just our main protagonist driving away. 6. Kickstarter funding. Does that mean they did it for the money? Can't be for the need for another zombie flick. 7. Coup de grâce - film can't even pass middle school spelling. Cases in point, two subtitled lines: (a.) "the car drove pass" (b.) "the wound oozed puss".
