The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

I'm not a horror movie fan but in recent years I've found the experience of watching some horror movies to be rewarding. This is one of the good ones, at least when it isn't too scary. And even then, I suppose it is a satisfying experience for some horror fans.Warwick Davis makes an excellent villain. Not an iconic one, and not really my taste. But he is fun and even funny, with a sick and demented sense of humor and very violent tendencies. There are only a few acts of violence, and even some that occur offscreen, but most of these are quite bloody. I'm not sure how much of his look is makeup and how much is visual effects, but his appearance is quite well done. I would even compare him to Jim Carrey's Grinch, though only his clothes are green. I will say he is quite good at scary surprise experiences, though I found I could often predict when he would pop up and frighten people. If real horror fans can do this, maybe this is not a good thing. The start of the movie is not what I would consider ideal, since it does suggest the horror theme quite early. But it sets up what comes later, which is what I really enjoyed. An entirely different movie starts with the first appearance of the spoiled Tory, upset about being taken away from her precious California with its malls, and her father. Now this is a light-hearted comedy, with Tory struggling to adjust to this terrible place. And Jennifer Aniston was quite pretty at that age. She's still pretty now, but this is different. Plus she wears shorts through most of the film. After I enjoyed so much of her recent work, it was nice to see her in an early role (yes, I know, but doing that would involve Ross, Phoebe and Monica and I'm not prepared to do that). Aniston is so good here I would not be surprised if producers of a certain TV series saw her and liked her.We are soon introduced to the three guys who are fixing up the rundown O'Grady place (which looks pretty nice but I'm probably seeing it as it was brand-new). I especially liked Robert Gorman as young Alex, who probably shouldn't have been doing the kind of work the older men did. I don't know the name, but he showed potential and I now see he went on to do a lot more, which is not surprising.Mark Holton is a likeable Ozzie, who from the way everyone talks must be what used to be called mentally challenged. I didn't see it myself, but Ozzie wasn't as intelligent as some people. He is childlike and idealistic and believes in the fantastic, unlike the others. And he is right.Ken Olandt, I assume, will appeal to the females who like good-looking sensitive macho guys. I liked him too as the leader of the workers. If you remember Larry and his brothers Darryl, after Ozzie finds the gold coins belonging to the title villain, "my other brother Darryl" actually gets to speak as the main who Ozzie and Alex take the coin to in order to find if it is worth anything.Eventually everything starts going wrong, and there is plenty of excitement and terror, and not as much comedy unless you count the darker type. You wonder if anyone will make it out alive. But these young people are quite skilled at coming up with solutions to their crisis. It's interesting to watch how they get out of their predicament--if any of them do!It's not too bad if you don't want just horror.

A hilarious attempt to create a slasher movie with a leprechaun as the main villain, it's all about a girl (A young Jennifer Aniston) and her dad who move to the country. What they don't know is that the previous owner stole the gold of a leprechaun and locked it up in the basement, They hire 2 men and a boy to do a paint job and the clumsy one (who's supposed to be mentally challenged) accidentally releases the leprechaun (A great part played by Warwick Davis). And soon the leprechaun starts killing off\or terrorizes anyone who comes on his path, the thing i personally really like about this movie and it's sequel is the acting of Warwick Davis because he really let's him self go as a psychotic little creep who just wants his gold back. He did a great job on the on-liners and acting, i think most fans of the genre are known with the film. However i don't know about the most people who watch mainstream movies, it never really gets over the top bloody or violent. It's more of a game of hide and seek between the victims and the leprechaun, if you've never seen it just give it try. It's a well made horror comedy, however there's one aspect i can't stand which is that Jennifer Aniston acts like she's embarrassed when someone finds out she starred in this movie. Typicall starlet behavior, there's nothing wrong with starring in a B movie. Anyway in my opinion it's a good one. Just watch it and you'll have a blast.

This marks the beginning of one of the worst film series ever made. Both this website and RottenTomatoes have these installments as some of the worst movie series of all time and it's not hard to see why. It's really amazing how powerful this leprechaun is. When looking at slasher movie villains, I'm not kidding, this guy has killed more people than any other villain who talks! Yeah, even more than Freddy Krueger! His total count is 45 and Freddy's is 42! I guess the reason the character isn't more popular is because of how stupid he is. This movie is also Jennifer Aniston's film debut.Yeah, I doubt she looks back at this role in pride. The only reason I didn't give this less than a 3/10 is because it did make me laugh with how utterly stupid it was. Also, from what I've heard it's at least not as bad as the many sequels, which I'll unfortunately get to eventually. This movie features a mass murderer leprechaun who wants all his gold coins. That's really all you need to know. Even being melted at the end doesn't kill him off! Well, his closing narration assures us that he'll unfortunately be back. This leprechaun can literally teleport, reform, mimic other voices and flip a car over. He's that powerful! *1/2
