| Drama Romance

Christina (Claudia Karvan) is a school teacher from a wealthy Greek-Australian background, engaged to a lawyer and content with the traditional course of her life. She begins teaching at an inner-city working-class school and she finds her ideas challenged by the students. Involving herself in a campaign by a group of non-anglo students to form a soccer club in a school where the racist PE teacher only supports Australian Rules Football, Christina starts falling in love with aspiring soccer player, 17 year old Nick (Alex Dimitriades). The ensuing affair forces Christina to challenge herself, her family and the culture she lives in. Managing to effectively combine comedy with a refreshing examination of contemporary ethnic relationships in Australia, beautifully acted by a young cast, and insightfully scripted.

The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.

It's refreshing to see home grown cinema like this gracing our screens, and "The Heartbreak Kid" is now yet another Aussie movie we can be proud of.Michael Jenkins' film tells the story of forbidden love between 22 year old teacher Christina and her 17 year old student, Nick. Not only is their relationship socially unacceptable, but in the Greek community it is a disgrace to the family. Alex Dimitriades and Claudia Karvan are convincing in a simple movie about two people caught in a real life situation.Melburnians are sure to enjoy this often funny film not only for the familiar locale but also for the characters that are so true to life. Very enjoyable.Friday, July 23, 1993 - Hoyts Forest Hill Chase

While it is not a masterpiece it succeed in arousing the viewers passion and sympathy. The story maybe used before, but the script and acting give it a fresher look. Of course the two lovers act beautifully ( In bed and Out of it). And they look beautifull.

When i sat down to watch this film i thought that it would be another story about a kids infatuation with an older person, and it would go nowhere. But i was very supprised and pleased that it had some depth to it. Nick falls in love with his teacher and at first she doesnt want to know, as she is engaged and is planning a big wedding. Nick persists and she finally gives in. I dont want to give too much away about the film, but if your looking for a film about very strong relationships, then definatly see this one.

I have recently seen this film and I thought I just had to write about it. What I liked about it was the truth in it, the innocent love and to have strength to do something like "papa" and "Nick" did. Another great thing about it is the end, through the whole film I thought to myself; ohh this is going to end like that, but when the movie was over it had surprised me, because it was nothing like I thought it would end, only much better. Without telling to much, go see the movie, it will surprise you.
