The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

I just watched "Light of Day" again, one of my favorite 80's movies. It's a lost treasure, having never been released on DVD in the US due to an obscure IP issue. I only managed to find it as a mediocre transfer from VHS, which is sad and surprising. It's probably the most realistic and competent portrayal of the working class US family in the 1980's ever caught on film. Flawlessly cast, perfectly executed for what it is (meaning any technical rough edges only make it better), and heartbreakingly relatable.Joan Jett excels in a role not much different from herself in real life. Gena Rowlands and Jason Miller, as eminently recognizable actors (but not exactly super stars that every viewer can name), were a perfect selection for parents that the average viewer will instantly, subconsciously identify as representative of the previous generation. And Micheal J. Fox perfectly balances Jett in a performance that I wouldn't go so far as to say demonstrates *range* so much as it just happened to be a perfect-fit (tho the role itself certainly has more depth than what's he's generally known for). And the music is great!I love it. I relate to it. More subtlety and realism than any John Hughes 80's classic. Accidental excellence *in the extreme*! Find it. Watch it. Petition Sony Pictures for a Blu-Ray release!!!

MJ Fox may have done his best serious acting here, but jett is better. A strange thing about the 70's runaways group. One chick, the one Dakota played in the biopic of the runaways recently, Cherrie Curie, did a great job acting in the 1980 movie Foxes.....and Joan nails it in 87...go figure....A simple, very depressing, but realistic movie....slice of life stuff. Which, as someone mentioned, is obviously why it flopped at the BO. Very good bar band stuff from Jett here.....Paul Schrader has never made a movie without merit. Keep in mind this is the guy who wrote the script for Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, so even his least movies have something to offer. Schrader deals in some very heavy, deep human motivations and inclinations in his flicks, and never made a movie that was light fluff yet. This is the closest to that claim, and even this movie has merit and substance. Prob the worst movie he made, but even this is good....Let's face it, the guy has never made a bad movie...

I enjoyed the movie because it reminded me of growing up in Cleveland and going to bars and listening to some AWSOME bar bands that no one has ever heard of. Joan Jett does a fine job acting and the soundtrack is great.

I'm a huge Nine Inch Nails fan. Nice movie.. but the real thing that I took notice to is the music by Exotic Birds. This is one of the bands Trent Reznor used to play in. Way before he ever started []\[] [] []/[]Trent is a master keyboardist. It wouldn't suprise me to see him scoring a movie. Oh wait.... NBK.. heh, kinda forgot.-BlazeFoxKitsune =^.^=
