I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.

The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.

Yesterday this awful product was broadcasted on dutch television. Wow...it was bad ! Simon is regarded as a pure and original film if one has to believe it's reputation here in the Low-lands. but it is hard to find a more terribly made movie on the planet.the credentials Cees Geel got for his role as Simon are totally over the top.the script is sooo bad.the casting and acting could'nt be worse. the dubbed in sound and synchronization of the voices...wow that really sucks. One is hardly able to understand the unclear and corny conversations that are being spoken. I could'nt believe the director was the same ' Eddy Terstall'who appeared so integer to me as i'v seen him in numerous talk shows or whatever..... This Dutch -classic is as bad as soldier of orange F.I.... You can't believe the crappy script it follows... Good to've seen it though.... The guy who plays Simon is to-ta-ly mis-casted for the role he is pretending to play.Corny Crap.

Yeah, I think we have a Dutch classic here. I saw this movie a couple of months ago, and I was very impressed. I still want to have this film on (double) DVD. On the forum, I read something about the Dutch being nationalistic for voting for this film really high. That has absolutely NOTHING to do with nationalism (like American people aren't nationalistic); it's just a great film. This film proves that euthanasia, cancer, AIDS can be só funny! And it's done in a really respectful manner: that's the great thing about 'Simon'. Loaded with beautifully cinematography, production-design and wonderful acting by especially Cees Geel. Too bad Americans are so conservative that they didn't nominate it for an Academy Award. Yes, this film contains a lots of bare breasts, gays, 'filthy' talk and all the other things I named above. But in sensitive way, and by far NOT vulgar or something. 'Hij zal je leven veranderen', (He will change your life) is the tag line of the movie. That's a bit too much, but fore those who are afraid to see films with subjects like these, 'Simon' is definitely worth a try.

This Dutch movie is a movie about the typical Dutch customs. Sex, soft drugs, alcohol and Amsterdam, with a little homosexuality on the side. Only this time, it has a little more to it then that. With a lot of humor, this film tells the life story of Simon. Simon is a type of person that doesn't beat around the bush, he is straightforward and just. During the movie, I got attached to Simon and, though he was a bit rough, really started to like him and his humor. Because the plot is not very spectacular, you can guess how the movie is going to end, just by reading the back cover, it uses good acting, humor and the intensity of the disease to make the viewer interested until the very end of the movie.Good movie from the Netherlands: Big 8 from me.

Simon is real in every way. Living in the part of Amsterdam called the Jordaan where the last "real" Amsterdam people live. This movie is drenched in dutch culture, including the coffee shops. Simon is a soft drugs dealer and owns a coffee shop in Amsterdam. Simon tells the story about two friends, Simon and Camiel. Camiel is fascinated by Simon, he enjoys how Simons personality gets them in strange situations and places. After a holiday in Thailand their friendship ends due to a mistake Camiel made. Years later Camiel meets Simon again. Now things are very different, Simon has cancer. This movie is one of the most moving pictures I have ever seen. Partly because it captures dutch culture spot on, and it feels so real. The other reason is that the story is just great. Eddy Terstall wrote and directed the movie. And he knows his thing. Knowing what is important and what is trivial. This is clearly the best movie he made. The movie Rent-a-friend was clearly a step in the right direction. But with this one he has surpassed himself. If I should describe this movie in just one word: impressive.
