Restless Natives (1986)
Two lads in Edinburgh embark on a non-violent spree of robberies. They dress up in clown masks and act as modern highwaymen, robbing coach loads of tourists in the highlands. In the process they become folk heroes to the locals. Their adventures make for a whimsical and gentle comedy, in the Bill Forsyth vein.

Perfect cast and a good story
This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
Seen this when it first came out and a firm family favourite, absolutely hilarious! A film which never tires of making me laugh, timeless despite it being set in the 1980's. The humour and struggles are there for all to see, especially between the two main characters and the police, the Scots & American drafted in makes it comedic!Love it!!
A film that improves with age for anyone who is/was a resident of Edinburgh as it has a nice nostalgic feel to it. Technically, the film is beautifully shot with a combination of Edinburgh council estates and the more tourist friendly city centre and the sprawling backdrop of the Scottish highlands. The acting is acceptable at most but a common complaint with any film set in the east coast is the west coast accents used throughout. Another confusing matter is the use of Glasgow in some scenes (the cemetery scenes)although these problems would appear to be superficial to anyone outside Edinburgh. Overall a pleasant, pre - irony slice of Scottish cinema.
Please post if you find this film on sale...or if you can find the rights to it. I'm desperate to sign it up and resell it on DVD.This is one of my favourite films of all time. I have looked high and low for a copy. I now find myself in the position of head of acquisitions at a film distributor...and I'm really looking for the film owner. If you are the owner or know who it is please let me know. I'd love to get this out on sale again as I love it, but also I think it's an undiscovred treat for the rest of the world that never saw it.CheersNeil
