It’s an especially fun movie from a director and cast who are clearly having a good time allowing themselves to let loose.

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

They don't call this the dream cast for nothing. The story and score are so wonderfully produced here. Colm Wilkinson as Jean ValJean is legendary. Few can really come close to Wilkinson's portrayal of the lead role. He shows a wide array of emotion in all of his songs.Other cast members (in no specific order): Philip Quast as Javert is fantastic, he plays the role so convincingly, one of a few that I've seen do so. "Stars," "The Confrontation" and "Javert's Suicide" were flawless on his part. Jenny Galloway as Madame Thenardier is flawless, her singing, acting, and accent make the role special. In conclusion, Quast and Galloway were my favorite parts of the show. As Galloway's stage husband, Alun Armstrong brings a convincing menace to Thenardier during "Master of the House." Michael Ball and Judy Kuhn are the best ever as the lovers Marius and Cosette. "A Heart Full of Love" is song beautifully. Lea Salonga as Eponine is great, "On My Own" is spectacular. Ruthie Henshall as Fantine is heartbreaking, "I Dreamed a Dream" and "Fantine's Death" are perfect. Michael Maguire as Enjolras wasn't terrible, but seemed a little too demanding for a student at times.Other minor characters: Hannah Chick (Young Cosette) and Adam Searles (Gavroche) did good. So did the ABC Friends. Great job overall!

There is only one word I can think of for this unmelodious extravaganza, now bellowing from my TV as I write: OVERWROUGHT! It has bleated, seemingly endlessly, for nearly two hours now, and I am yet to hear a decent song. The seats in the theater must be very uncomfortable, as I can think of no other reason for the standing ovations that have greeted some of these very competent performers smirkingly belting out this dreadful material. The plot also seems overwrought, and overwhelmingly depressing, although I seem to recall an old movie of this name being quite interesting ... perhaps with Charles Laughton.Surely, the stage play must be much better in flow and dramatic exposition, but it no doubt has the same wretched music. Why, you may ask, am I torturing myself by continuing to watch and listen to this show? Well, it was loaned by a friend who asks me to let him know which number(s) I like best. I honestly don't know what I am going to tell him.

Having been a big fan of les mis before buying this DVD i knew i'd enjoy it but wow! Tis is the most phenomenal recording of the musical there has ever been. You don't need the full stage production, hearing the music performed by a huge orchestra, choir and undoubtedly the best cast there has ever been is breathtaking. You will laugh, cry and lose yourself in this brilliant show. particular attention should be drawn to colm wilkinson who owns the role of Van Jean and philip quast who's voice is so full of meaning and emotion you can't help but become spellbound.watch it! you haven't lived until you've seen it.

I love Les Mis. I love seeing it staged, I love the book, I love listening to it for hours upon end.But the thing is, a concert just doesn't work. The actors are obviously very confused. Some overact, some underact, some are very inconsistent because they are in front of a mic and just don't know how to respond to it. I don't blame them. They try their best, but it's hard to do a play when you're not allowed to... y'know... act. Also, I don't like Lea Salonga that much as Eponine. I am a HUGE Lea fan, but her voice is just too pretty and she's too mature for the role.
