i must have seen a different film!!
Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.
The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
I feel the writer Kleiser and Phelps should be ashamed of themselves. This movie, fun and enjoyable is a remake of Ride the Wild Surf of the 60s. They wont admit it though. Instead of 4 friends come to surf north shore, they combined the 4 into one. One of the boys falls in love, one is torn about going to school. Tab Hunter falls in love with the local girl who also does the hula for the crowd. Even the rain scene where they run for cover is the same as the scene with Fabian and Fabres but they run to a cabin. This is just an updated version. What is really pathetic is Kleiser and Phelps not realizing they have Brudda IZ in their movie. One of the most belove local talents from Hawaii and they disrespected him in the commentary by calling him "The Fat guy and the Big Guy". That was just wrong.

Kudos to the company for actually believing in this film, after all of these years, and including interviews with the original cast. This film touched a nerve in a whole generation of surfers and wanna be surfers alike. Later Barneys.
This film has the language, the style and the attitude down ... plus greats rides from Occy (a world champ) and the great Jerry Lopez. John Philbin as Turtle has the surf pidgin down, and the surfing scenes are still the best ever. A true classic that can be seen many times. Nia Peeples is a babe, and Laird Hamilton shows the early stuff that has made him the world's number one extreme surfer.
This movie is a treat from the beginning to the very end. If you were a child of the 80's, this one is right up your alley. Matt Adler who is the main character in this movie is a very underrated actor. If you do go out and rent this one, you will be very surprised. This one is a must see.
