Michelle McNab gets a call from a woman who wants to sign her dog over to the RSPCA, but the animal is so unwell it may not survive. Mel Fisher has a problem when she wants to take a dog into care as the owner has been arrested, while Bristol inspector Miranda Albinson rescues two skinny Newfoundlands and a Pomeranian puppy so malnourished that its growth has been stunted.

Chris Shaw sets out to find the owner of a dog abandoned in a park, while Peterborough officer Justin Stubbs gives an owner a week to clean up his rubbish-strewn house or risk losing his pet. In Essex, Matt Gough has to seek advice from an animal behaviour expert after taking charge of a Staffordshire bull terrier that was being kept in a small cage.

In Birmingham inspector Herchy Boal has to take in a dog which has suffered a broken leg after it was hit by a car, as the owners cannot afford the medical bills. In east London, Clare Dewis responds to a call about a Staffordshire bull terrier that she previously rescued from a life of neglect, and Justin Stubbs is appalled to discover a dog with an untreated allergy to fleas, which has caused most of its fur to fall out.

In south London, inspectors Kate Fletcher and Becky London make a shocking discovery when they team up with the police to rescue dogs from an owner who is banned from keeping animals. Birmingham officer Herchy Boal gives a man advice on grooming his shih tzu, and encounters a skinny Dalmatian in desperate need of veterinary treatment.

Inspector Clare Dew visits a house in east London after a call about a dog and its puppies left on their own for days, while Bristol animal welfare officer Dan Hatfield visits the owners of an obese Staffordshire bull terrier to discuss his concerns. In Grimsby, inspector Stuart Wainwright discovers dogs barricaded in sheds, and also finds two puppies locked in a dirty bathroom when he explores the property further.

In south Wales, inspectors Keith Hogben and Gemma Cooper follow up a report of two dogs being kept in appalling conditions and discover seven puppies are also loose in the house and adding to the mess. On a hot summer's day in Birmingham, Scott Vanes deals with a canine that has been locked in a small conservatory, while Herchy Boal visits a family having trouble letting go of an old dog with health problems.
