Simple and well acted, it has tension enough to knot the stomach.

I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

Really difficult to care about super-rich people maybe having to pay a little tax. Not worth watching. Feels like it belongs in a box set with Natalie Portman doing Jackie and Naomi Watts doing Diana - all of them utterly mediocre.

I agreed with the reviewer that there could have been a different title for this film (perhaps "I am Monaco"). However in the final scene I understood why the title fit. When Hitchcock offered Grace one million dollars to play a part in a movie I thought this might have been a plot device where the sum could have gone toward paying off Monaco's debt to help show that even that would not sway the Princess from her new role or that it was such a pittance it could not address the deficit to help understand the severity of the blockade. There were sufficient intrigues without that aspect. The story and portrayals were touching making the film worthy watching. Although I appreciate the negative reviews they did not sway me from enjoying the movie.

It's 1961. Former Hollywood star Grace Kelly (Nicole Kidman) is married to Rainier III, Prince of Monaco (Tim Roth) with two kids. Hitchcock tries to lure her back to Hollywood for his movie Marnie. France is fighting a colonial war in Algeria and is demanding taxation from Monaco. Charles De Gaulle is threatening invasion. Grace Kelly is suffocating under the pressure and decides to do the movie.I came into this movie knowing that it's been critically panned but not necessarily why. At first, I thought the movie isn't that bad. There is definitely artistic license being taken with the historical events but that's par for the course. Then after twenty to thirty minutes, it became clear that something is glaringly wrong with this movie. The overwrought melodrama with the historical events left a bitter taste. Finally, I read that very little of it is historically accurate which makes a lot of sense. None of it rang true when I saw it. It's like a bad soap opera. Some of the visuals are beautifully shot but sometimes it goes overboard like it's trying way too hard. There are many ridiculous things like her frustration day after day getting acting lessons. The screenwriter should remember that she was actually a professional actress. It's fine that she's told to act a certain way but Grace Kelly could easily achieve it all by herself without any trouble or any coaching. It becomes a group of fictional incorrect characters in a surreal play that intersects sometimes with historical events.

A fairy tale with Charles de Gaulle as the Big Bad Wolf. By 1962, France's war in Algeria was getting expensive. De Gaulle's solution was to bully Monaco into imposing income taxes and give that tax money to France. He was angry that French businesses were relocating to no-income-tax Monaco. The opening says inspired by real events. The part about the dispute between France and Monaco really happened; however, the war in Algeria ended before events in the movie culminated. Apparently the Grimaldis were unhappy about the movie. It's a Weinstein movie and was not released in theaters. I saw it on Netflix. Nicole Kidman plays Princess Grace. The movie is longer than the story, some scenes come off as contrived, but it's a nice story and a nice movie. Not many of those around these days.
