It is not deep, but it is fun to watch. It does have a bit more of an edge to it than other similar films.

This was one of the few movies I've recently watched and immediately wanted to tell the world it is GOOD, very good! The story is intriguing and the actors played it very well but the way it was narrated added just the right spice to make it perfect. It kept me a bit puzzled almost all the way but game me just the right amount of clarity and fulfillment at the end.

I was able to see this movie on Amazon Prime streaming. As soon as I finished it I decided to wait a week and see it again. The movie has a lot going on, focusing on young Sidney Hall (Logan Lerman, about 24 during filming), starting in high school, on to his first novel, his marriage to a childhood sweetheart, to his seeking to get away from it all.The movie's editing style has the story cutting from one period to another, then back, throughout the movie, but it is always clear which stage of Sidney's life we are seeing.Michelle Monaghan is really good as his mom, too overbearing and part of the reason Sidney vanished. Elle Fanning, who was about 18 during filming, is Melody, his neighbor, girlfriend, and eventually his wife. Kyle Chandler is very good as "The Searcher", looking for Sidney and wanting to write a book about him.I can see where this type of story and movie-making style may not be for everyone but I really like it a lot, it has a certain grit to it that rings true within a fictional story.

The Vanishing of Sidney Hall was by far my favorite movie of the year. I watched it thinking it would be a stinker because of the ugly reviews given it by Rotten Tomatoes and The Sundance Film Festival. The script was well written with perfect timing and the cinematography was haunting. I can only conclude that someone had blacklisted this movie. This film was beautiful from start to finish.
