Unlike most anthology films, "Paris, je t'aime" has an amazingly high hit ratio: out of its 18 shorts, at least 8 are very good, 1 is a masterpiece, and only 1 is skippable, imho. At first it can be frustrating, because the endings are so abrupt, but it gets better and better and better as it goes along. Among the standout shorts: the Coen Brothers' humorous metro sketch, Nobuhiro Suwa's touching story of a mother (beautifully acted by Juliette Binoche) who has recently lost her son, Alfonso Cuaron's twisty little tale (in one continuous camera shot), Isabel Coixet's unpredictable life lesson, Oliver Schmitz's perfectly rounded romantic mystery, Vincenzo Natali's ethereal and stylized vampire yarn, Wes Craven's (!) witty and magical tribute to Oscar Wilde's wit, Alexander Payne's lovely, lonely, bittersweet trip, and - my favorite - Tom Twyker's masterful summation of life and love in 5 minutes! The only miss is Christopher Doyle's "bad hair day" of an episode, but come on - we're talking one miss out of 18 tries! A wonderful city, a wonderful movie. ***1/2 out of 4.

In this anthology of short (5 minute) films Paris is revealed through eighteen separate stories revolving around the theme of love. Subtitled for the most part this includes an all-star cast and a mixed bag of vignettes; some good, some boring, some make you think and some are just plain bizarre but none of them are long enough to really matter. This didn't leave its mark on me and if there was a bigger message meant to be conveyed, I didn't get it. I think what I enjoyed most (besides Paris itself) was all the different actors and directors involved (22) Very fun.A couple stories did stand out; Natalie Portman and her blind student boyfriend ("Faubourg Saint-Denis"), Rufus Sewell finding love and ghosts in the cemetery ("Pere-Lachaise") and ("Place des Fetes") where a woman leaves her baby in care to go look after another ladies baby while she goes to work. 01.26.14

Paris, je t'aime, is an interesting melange of 18 vignettes directed by a host of different directors. Naturally, certain sequences are considerably more affecting than others. "Loin du 16ieme" is a rather profound look at the divide between rich and poor, as well as between native-born French women and the emigres imported to be their servants. "Quartier de la Madeleine" is a very powerful portrait of a drugged-out actress and her boyfriend/pusher. "Faubourg Saint-Denis" is a moving portrait of a young, frivolous actress (Natalie Portman), who plays with and then abandons a blind admirer. Many other sequences seem either incomplete ("Les Marais") or incomprehensible ("Porte de Choisy") but, on the whole, there are more good moments than bad in this film.My disagreement with all those who have commented on this movie favorably is that somehow this movie is supposed to make its viewers love and and admire Paris and perhaps long to visit the "city of lights". But the Paris shown in this film is in large measure an alcoholic, drugged-out, impoverished, and decadent society essentially living off the glories of its past. The only even remotely enthusiastic characters in the film are the Americans and Englishmen who are visiting: the French characters seem depressed, washed up, and largely incapable of action. I am sure that Paris remains an inspiring and beautiful city -- as it has been through the centuries. But one would never know it from watching this sorrowful portrait of a once glorious city on the way out. Love this Paris? Really?

A two hour feature focusing on Paris, it's culture, love and people, Paris je Tame does that. A team Of 20 odd directors and one theme. Different perspectives. Different takes, some humorous , some serious, some thought provoking , others casual. Sometimes, painfully simple, sometimes ambiguous, sometimes uncertain , sometimes complex.Inspite of this variety , a very ordinary movie. Basically only a few of the segments are worth watching. Some are badly clichéd. Some unforgivably terse. Even the acting follows the suit of the Direction.A movie which , speaking succinctly , is the death knell for experimental Cinema.I had to watch the movie in four sittings, for after a while it got to me pretty badly , in a revolting sort of way. It was quite a bore feature actually.Among my favourite segments were Parc Monceau , Tuileries Faubourg Saint-Denis ,Bastille . It's not that the others were bad. Emily Mortimer acted well. So did the other actors like Margo Martindale , Rufus Sewell etc.Intelligently conceived yet poorly executed , I didn't like it .But then taken individually each segment may appeal to different people and this may help the audience to take a favourable view of the movie . May I'll too, later in life when I get personally acquainted with the concept of "LOVE" and the City Of Paris.
