At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
I really wanted to like this film. The subject of surrogacy and gay families, I thought, would make for a really interesting documentary. However, the main characters of the gay couple (Desmond and Curtis) and the surrogate mother (Angela) were incredibly unrelatable. The kids have Jon Bon Jovi as their godfather and attend award shows. Their parents, both disgustingly wealthy in large part to Desmond's songwriting career, met their surrogate while studying with Deepak Chopra in India. She decided she was cool with getting pregnant on a trip to the south of France. This documentary felt less like the journey that gay couples go through to conceive and more like a pet project for this wealthy family.
