The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one

The reason this movie did not do as well or Carrey was slammed was because he came off the very kiddie friendly Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber, Batman and The Mask. Now that will start anyone's career off to a blazing start! What was Jim's audience expecting? More silly comedy. Parents take their kids to The Cable Guy (title fits a dumb silly JC comedy) and wonder what is going on here! This is a movie for today's kids, not back in 96. That is why this movie holds up so well. It is an adult dark comedy.Matthew Broderick was as usual boring, but that complimented Carrey. The supporting cast was great. A lot of up and coming stars. Comedies are really a string of scenes like a SNL episode that at the end hope to make any sense. There are few really good comedy movies. The Cable Guy has all the good scenes and ties it together pretty well.Beneath the surface is a lot of depth about a very lonely guy trying to connect because he was abandoned as a kid and TV was the world he knew. This rings true for many. He felt empowered with his "special customers" and overcompensated, but deep down just wanted a buddy. I think this movie is much more honest than many would admit!

The Cable Guy is absolutely an underrated film snubbed by movie critics. Maybe it is the fact that Jim Carrey has shifted from a very comical movie filled with exaggerated facial expressions and slapstick gags of the movies the Mask and Ace Ventura. It is quite an unusual shift of Jim who reaches the title of an A-list comedian that time. Some critics seem to be distraught that Carry received an enormous $20 million paycheck. Carrey gave a remarkable performance to Chip Douglas (not his real name). He clearly gave the role justice for providing the audience a clear view of how twisted, psychotic, and creepy his character is. He befriends with Matthew Broderick (Steven) which seems bewildered by Carrey's unusual antics. But they became friends in the earlier part of the film. Many see Broderick's performance as bland and boring but I actually think that it fits for his role. He is just living his normal and dull life and then suddenly a happy-go-lucky cable guy just introduced himself and Steven's life was little by little turned upside down ever since. A story about man meet stalker is kind of a cliché but how the movie revolves is superb. A random guy offering free cable in exchange for friendship and companion is the start of a weird and unfortunate series of event for Matthew. Some of Carrey's fans that time have been grouped into two after The Cable Guy was released: those who love the movie and those who hated it because it is not the Carrey they know from the Mask and Ace Ventura. But throughout the years, the film receives an increasing acceptance not only from the fans but also to movie critics. I can say that The Cable Guy is one of the best dark comedies in the 90's. It can also be considered as a thriller (but in a comedic way) because of Chip's sadistic and sinister character. Back then, I find the nightmare scene where Chip is forcing to break Steven's door was horrifying yet funny. One of the craziest scenes is when Chip and Steven are talking in jail and the scene where they are playing porno password with Steven's family. The part where Chip whispered "nipples" is totally hilarious and I literally shed some tears because of laughing so hard. I doubt that the lack of acclaim for this film is not because of the story but because Jim Carrey is in it (famous for his infamous humor) but then again, the film is smartly written. Given the fact that Chip is a TV-addict, the references in different TV shows and movies (the parody of the Silence of the Lambs in the Medieval Times is totally hilarious!) were well thought off. If you don't like the film the first time you watched (especially way back that year) is pretty normal but it give it a shot now. I thought the movie was just a normal one back then but after the 2nd and 3rd watching (recently), I now truly grasp the underlying jokes and fanatical gags of this film!

The Cable Guy (1996): Dir: Ben Stiller / Cast: Jim Carrey, Matthew Broderick, Leslie Mann, Jack Black, George Segal: Demonstration of what can happen if parents allow their children to be babysat by the TV. Title regards attachment and the cable represents a person. After marriage problems Matthew Broderick moves into a new place and hooked up with free cable by the cable guy. Broderick cannot get rid of him as he makes repeated visits and calls often. After politely calling off the friendship he goes to jail for equipment found in his home. At one point the cable guy sings "Somebody to Love" while Broderick is seduced by a prostitute. There is also tasteless game that Broderick's parents are pulled into. Director Ben Stiller delivers upon the message but it plainly isn't funny. He previously made Reality Bites, which is a different style film. Carrey is miscast and largely predictable and too silly. Broderick's role is more believable for his dilemma is one that viewers may relate to. Leslie Mann plays Broderick's girlfriend in what amounts to a standard role. Jack Black also appears as a friend of Broderick's. George Segal and Diane Baker have the thankless roles of Broderick's victimized parents. Energetic visual style adds to the mood but potential message of dysfunctional relationships is devoid within a screenplay that isn't worth plugging into. Score: 5 ½ / 10

This is maybe the worst movie ever made. And that comes from a person who usually loves everything Jim Carrey does. And actually he isn't doing anything wrong, he's a great actor, not only in "Dumb and dumber", but in this movie to. The thing is, he should never have participated in this film. The script, the story and everything else with it makes me sick. I bought the movie for about 50 cent, and I can tell you this, I want my 50 cent an 96 minutes back. The beginning of the movie seemed quite interesting, and you thought, this could be one of those movies like "Ace ventura" or "Me, myself and Irene". But then the minutes past and you started wondering when the funny parts would come. The sad truth is, they never came, until the end when the movie ended.
